Rupert Sheldrake and Morphic Resonance: A Controversial Hypothesis of Memory in Nature
Rupert Sheldrake is a British biologist and author best known for the hypothesis he calls morphic resonance: the proposal that similar self-organizing systems may influence one another across time through a kind of collective memory. First developed publicly in A New Science of Life in 1981, the idea remains controversial and is not part of mainstream biological theory.
Sheldrake's importance to The Mind Magnet lies precisely in that contested position. His career joins legitimate early work in plant biology with later proposals about formative causation, animal behavior, telepathy, and the possibility that memory is not confined to individual nervous systems.

From Plant Biology to Formative Causation
Sheldrake trained in biology at Cambridge and worked in plant development and crop physiology before turning toward broader theoretical questions about how living forms are organized. His later work should not be treated as though it represents a consensus extension of his earlier biological research; it was a deliberate departure into speculative theory.
In 1981 he proposed the hypothesis of formative causation. Organisms, behaviors, and other self-organizing systems, he argued, may be influenced by previous similar systems through morphic resonance.
What Morphic Resonance Claims
In Sheldrake's formulation, repeated patterns create what he describes as a kind of memory in nature. If a form or behavior occurs many times, similar systems might subsequently tend to reproduce it more readily even without ordinary genetic, chemical, or communicative transmission.

This is not a standard biological field in the established sense of an electromagnetic, chemical, or developmental signaling field. 'Morphic field' is Sheldrake's theoretical construct, and the proposed mechanism has not been accepted as demonstrated by mainstream biology.
Morphogenesis Without a New Field
One of Sheldrake's starting questions concerns morphogenesis: how organisms reliably develop organized form. Modern developmental biology addresses this through gene regulation, cell signaling, mechanical forces, gradients, epigenetics, self-organization, and interactions among cells and tissues.
The fact that morphogenesis remains scientifically rich and complex does not by itself create evidence for morphic resonance. A genuine explanatory problem and a proposed solution are separate things.

Experiments and Disagreement
Sheldrake has proposed and conducted experiments intended to test morphic resonance, including learning and recognition tasks. He points to these as evidence supporting the hypothesis. Critics dispute the interpretation, methodology, reproducibility, or theoretical necessity of such results.
A revealing example is work conducted in collaboration with neuroscientist Steven Rose: Sheldrake interpreted the results as supportive, while Rose considered them inconsistent with the hypothesis. The disagreement illustrates why 'tested' is not the same as 'established.'
Telepathy and the Extended Mind
Sheldrake's later research broadened into reports of animals anticipating owners' returns, the sense of being stared at, telephone-call anticipation, and telepathy. He argues that close social groups may have morphic fields that permit forms of connection not explained by conventional sensory channels.

These claims remain disputed. Familiar social coordination, emotional contagion, collective intelligence, and network effects are real phenomena, but they should not be presented as evidence for telepathy or morphic resonance unless an experiment specifically establishes that connection.
'Laws' as Habits
Sheldrake also argues philosophically that regularities of nature may be more like evolving habits than eternally fixed laws. This is one of his most provocative ideas, but it is a metaphysical and scientific proposal rather than a consequence accepted by physics or biology.
It does, however, place him within a long history of thinkers who resist a picture of nature as static machinery. That is one reason his books resonate strongly within metaphysical and holistic communities.

Why Morphic Resonance Attracts Esoteric Readers
Morphic resonance resembles older ideas of collective memory, correspondence, subtle fields, and formative forces. Those similarities are historically interesting, but they do not make Theosophy, Akashic Records, Jung's collective unconscious, or ancient vitalism scientific confirmations of Sheldrake's hypothesis.
Likewise, modern concepts such as epigenetics, systems biology, complexity, and quantum fields should not be invoked as though they automatically vindicate morphic resonance. Each has its own evidence and technical meaning.
A Productive Fringe Question
The strongest way to read Sheldrake is neither as a suppressed genius already proven right nor as a thinker whose questions need never be examined. His work is a case study in how speculative hypotheses live at the boundary of science: they can generate tests and debate while remaining outside consensus because the evidence has not become sufficiently compelling or reproducible.
